About the Program:

Every year, Marten hires a small group of exceptional second year law students to participate in our summer program, providing them with an opportunity to gain substantive experience working with clients on some of the most complex environmental and energy projects in the country. Marten Summer Associates can expect a non-competitive, collegial work environment. Our Summer Associates do not compete with each other for a limited number of jobs. Each Summer Associate is evaluated on their own merit.

Summer Associates have the option to work from any of our offices.

Work Assignments

Marten Summer Associates will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend client meetings, court hearings, depositions, and more
  • Prepare witnesses and draft memoranda, briefs, motions and other court documents
  • Participate in legal research projects that align with their practice interests
  • Author an article to be featured in Marten Law News, our biweekly newsletter with over 40,000 subscribers

In addition to work assignments, our Summer Associates have the opportunity to attend in-house training programs, covering both the substantive and procedural aspects of a career in environmental and energy law. Summer associates are also invited to attend continuing legal education sessions offered by third parties during the summer.

Salary and Benefits

2L Summer Associates will be paid the equivalent of a first year associate's weekly salary. In addition, Summer Associates are offered a $5,000 living and housing stipend for the summer.

After Work Hours

Marten offers a variety of informal social activities, excursions, and networking opportunities for our Summer Associates. Headquartered in the Pacific Northwest, we offer Summer Associates the opportunities to get out and explore our beautiful surroundings. Past activities have included: day hikes to Mount Rainier National Park, sailing and fishing in the Puget Sound, off-roading adventures in the Central Cascade Mountains, and tickets to various Seattle and Portland sporting events. Marten also gives Summer Associates various networking opportunities, including but not limited to: client cocktail hours, Partner dinners, and opportunities to participate in Marten's professional networks.

Summer Associate Testimonials

Hear from previous summer associates about their time with Marten.

Hannah Ebersole (University of Minnesota '22)

"My experience with Marten Law's Summer Associate Program was intense, interesting, challenging, and fulfilling. I was able to do a wide range of work in many different fields of environmental law and was able to gain practical legal and transactional experience through my assignments and day-to-day tasks. I was able to sit in on depositions and see trial advocacy in action. I worked with a variety of attorneys whose vast, experienced knowledge helped me understand not only this area of the law, but also general legal issues."

Michael Smith (Lewis & Clark ’21)

“The firm threw me into the deep of the legal pool, assigning me substantive, varied and challenging projects. The firm culture is extraordinarily collegial and team-oriented, so I had somewhere to turn whenever I needed support or guidance.”

Jack Ross (University of Michigan ’20)

“I chose to return to the firm as a full-time associate because of the wonderful experience I had as a summer associate. The opportunity to take on meaningful responsibility from day one and to work with such a talented group of lawyers was exactly what I wanted coming out of law school.”
