Mike Lufkin, a partner with Marten Law Group, has practiced environmental law for nearly ten years in the State of Washington with a focus on environmental and natural resource litigation and climate change issues. During the course of his career, Mike has represented both public and private clients in matters involving project permitting, hazardous waste cleanup, development of environmental impact statements, and energy facility siting.

Mike has special expertise in the area of climate change. He assists clients in strategically analyzing their greenhouse gas assets and liabilities and helps tailor carbon management strategies to meet their business goals. In 2004 Mike took a one-year leave of absence from the firm in order to study climate change issues in the European Union. He received a fellowship from the Robert Bosch Foundation that enabled him to study the new European Union program on carbon emissions trading while working for the German government. Mike writes and speaks frequently on the issue of climate change and carbon emissions and has been a guest lecturer at Seattle University where he taught Clean Air Act and climate change issues to undergraduates.

Before joining Marten Law Group, Mike spent six years with the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. As an Assistant Attorney General, Mike served as Counsel for the Environment in proceedings before the Washington State Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council. In this role, he was charged with representing the public’s interest in protecting the quality of the environment in the siting of large energy facilities. Mike also represented the Washington State Departments of Agriculture, Health, and Fish and Wildlife. In his representation of these state agencies, he was involved with a broad array of environmental litigation involving water quality, growth management, pesticide use and regulation, endangered species, Tribal hunting and fishing, shellfish sanitation, natural resource damages, safe drinking water, SEPA, and NEPA.
